UPDATES FROM THE FIELD

Each week, all summer long, we wrote updates in the field and had them loaded onto our website in efforts to maintain public interest in our mission. Relaying narrative updates is never a simple exchange from such remote places but with great collaboration, this routine proved to be a unique, effective way to extend and share our adventures with many people. We used our satellite phone to call a dictation machine located in Milwaukee, WI where we had them transcribed and sent to an editor. That editor then copied the text into a template we created with a web journaling program called X-JOURNAL (www.x-journal.com). Using X-Journal simplified the work of our editor and uploaded our updates in an organized and technically sound manner--an incredibly convenient and advantageous program to use for this type of trip.

We also supplied visual updates from the field throughout the expedition. At each of our three food resupplies, we sent a digital media card in a stamped, addressed envelope with the float plane pilot to our editor back in the States for web posting. We shot both digital and 35mm film as a means to produce accurate documentation of our graciously sponsored gear. LONGS DRUGS donated 50 rolls of Kodak film and BRUNTON donated a Solar Roll that allowed us to recharge our camera and phone batteries. We used the waterproof Solar Roll in camp, while paddling calm river sections, on sunny days and the cloudy ones too.
